In a nutshell:No new Nintendo console could be complete without a new Super Mario game and the Wii certainly isn't going to be the one to break that rule. Which is a relief because this new game is just about the most exciting thing yet seen for the format.The lowdown:They might all technically be part of the same series but the one thing you want and expect from a new Super Mario game is simply something you never expected. That's certainly the case here with a whole new adventure set in outer space as Mario flies between an impossible collection of tiny planetoids. The nunchuck controller is used to move around in the game and the Wii remote used to interact with objects: picking up star shards, pulling elastic bits of scenery and ringing bells via a cursor pointer. Each planetoid has a completely different theme, from classic Mushroom Kingdom to more Sci-Fi environs, including some giant robotic boss characters. Better than Super Mario Sunshine? It looks like it so far.Most exciting moment:With some Wii games not really looking any better than GameCube games in terms of graphics this one definitely does with the constantly changing landscapes of all the planets looking particularly good.Since you ask:Famous for not releasing a game until they're absolutely satisfied with it Nintendo aren't making any promises for the release date of Super Mario Galaxy. They have suggested though that it'll be available very soon after the launch of the Wii, even if it's not part of the actual launch line-up.The bottom line: Mario returns to usher in the next generation of 3D platformers.HARRISON DENT
